'Only SRK & I have made it big without Godfathers'

'Only SRK & I have made it big without Godfathers'

Akshay Kumar's upcoming film Chandni Chowk To China has a special promotional song being shot on Akshay Kumar. Very much in the mould of the promotional song from Singh is Kinng that had Akshay Kumar rapping along with international sensation Snoop Dog, even this film has Akshay Kumar rapping with Bohemia.

The lyrics of the song are designed such that they go on singing glory of both, Akshay Kumar's character in the film as well as Akshay Kumar the actor. With the martial art theme of the movie, Chandni Chowk To China , the song goes on to compare Akshay Kumar's character with the likes of Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. But one line kind of sings laurels of Akshay – the actor saying 'Log Kahe Mujhe Bollywood Star, Naam Mera Akshay Kumar' .

Does that somewhere imply his numero-uno status in Bollywood? Ask Akshay and he is quick to clarify, "I never said through the song that I am number one or a superstar. All that the song tries to convey is that any common man like the character I play in Chandni Chowk To China can make it big without any Godfather".

And before we take any names, Akki reverts; "Today only Shah Rukh and myself are the ones in the industry who have reached where we are, without the backing of a Godfather. If we can do it, so can anybody". Akshay Kumar certainly has been doing incredibly well at the box-office and has already ushered himself in the league of number one actors like Shah Rukh Khan.

Another similarity between Akshay and Shah Rukh is that they both come from the capital city Delhi. In fact so attached is Akshay Kumar with the city that he included the address of his old house in Delhi in this rap number. Akshay confirms that singing the opening lines of the track, "This is Akshay Kumar, Gyarah Sauu Assi, Chatta Madan Gopal, Paurathe Wali Gali, Lal Killa, Chandani Chowk Delhi 6, Thuwade Saamne Le Ke Aaye, Ek Romanchak Gana".

Jackie Chan will watch Akshay Kumar's 'Chandni Chowk to China'

Jackie Chan will watch Akshay Kumar's 'Chandni Chowk to China'

Okay, we thought Akshay Kumar is only shaking up the Kings of Bollywood. But no....his star-power ranges from China to Hollywood. After charming the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Akshay Kumar is going to shock Jackie Chan with his stunts, somersaults et al. Yeah, apparently our favourite Jackie bhai from China has expressed a desire to watch 'Chandni Chowk to China'. Jackie is supposedly close to Gordon Liu (of 'Kill Bill' and 'The 36th Chamber of Shaolin' fame), who plays the villain in the movie, and he's keen to watch his buddy's first stint with Bollywood.

While Gordon's fans in China lovingly call him 'Master Killer' (gosh, that doesn't sound too loving, does it?), Akshay Kumar insists on referring to him as the Gordon Liu. And here's a bit of goss that your ears will instantly lap up. Apparently, Gordon Liu was casually asked about his experience working with Nikhil Advani vis-a-vis the Quentin Tarantino. Of course, Nikhil was terribly embarrassed about even being spoken in the same breath as the Oscar winning filmmaker. But Gordon's response totally stunned them all. He revealed that Quentin Tarantino is always seen laughing on the sets, also he doesn't tell anyone with what he's about to do next. On the other hand, according to the veteran filmmaker, our very own Nikhil is always serious and all he does is work, work, and work. Aha...now that's a compliment boy, take a bow. As the Chinese do, okay?

And we're hoping that after watching Akshay Kumar in action, Jackie Chan makes a big move from 'China to Chandni Chowk'. And Jackie, don't be threatened by Akshay Kumar! Take our word for it... the boy is a lovely soul.

Rajkumar Hirani’s I Am Stupid

Rajkumar Hirani’s I Am Stupid

This is not the first time that filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani has come up with such an eccentric title. His films, Munnabhai and 3 Idiots garnered enough interest from the Bollywood audience for their ‘out of the box’ titles. And the latest that Hirani has to offer is a film titled I am Stupid .

Apparently, Rajkumar Hirani who is nearing the completion of 3 Idiots has come up with this strange title for his next project. According to the current buzz, I am Stupid might be a sequel to Hirani’s 3 Idiots . It is believed that it is going to be a multi-starrer film and Hirani has already signed Kay Kay Menon for one of the lead roles.

Meanwhile, his 3 Idiots is based on Chetan Bhagat’s popular book 3 Mistakes of My life . It stars Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor and Sharman Joshi in lead roles.

Deepika can’t trust Ranbir

Before it could reach its final destination, the two young stars' love story came to an end. No sooner they accepted one another; they became the hot property of the tinselville. Films and endoresemnts kissed their feets and they became the most demanding couple of the industry. Wherever they went, paparazzi followed them. The relationship of the much talked about couple of Bollywood Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone is on the verge of ending. Trouble hit their paradise when Ranbir came closer to Katrina during the shooting of Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahini. Though the pair has been together for a year, they are yet to achieve one another’s trust.

When Deepika doubted Ranbir about having an affair with Katrina, their relationship turned bitter. When Ranbir came to know that Deepika, through an agent, spied on him, he turned furious and both broke over phone. Following the spat, Deepika has thrown Ranbir out of her life and is dating a mystery man. It has been known that she, with her new man turned up to watch Ghajini at a multiplex.

While, Deepika also does not carry a spotless image. Her alleged relationship with cricketer Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, model Nihar Pandhya has always been ignored by Ranbir.

1. Farhan Akhtar

He first made his mark in Bollywood as a director of such exceptional films as Dil Chahta Hai, Lakshya, and Don: The Chase Begins Again. Farhan then decided to try acting and made his debut in the brilliant film Rock On!!. Not only did he portray Aditya Shroff, lead singer of Magik, he also literally was the lead singer, singing all of the songs for the soundtrack. He was pitch perfect as an actor and a singer! He gave a real depth to the role, and his performance was praised by critics with words like phenomenal, revelation, and superb! We will next see him in Zoya Akhtar's Luck By Chance releasing on January 30th, and from the promos it looks like he is going to bat this one out of the park as well. We know we can't wait to see all of his films in the future, whether he is in front of or behind the camera, and are sure audiences will agree!

There is one film that we all wish we could have included on most of our lists, but since it is not a Bollywood film we felt we had to leave it out. However, you will see it pop up as a special mention on several of the lists and this is the first one we felt we had to add it to. Salman had an unexpected guest from Karachi

Salman had an unexpected guest from Karachi

By Subhash K Jha

Salman Khan's birthday celebration on his farm at Panvel on Saturday had an unexpected 14-year old guest from Karachi.

He was none other than than Adnan Sami's son Azaan who's currently visiting his father in Mumbai.

Azaan's bonding with Salman at the latter's birthday is now the talk of tinsel town. Apparently the star, known to connect instinctively with his young fans took to Azaan in a big way and made sure the boy felt comfortable in the alien environment.

In fact all the guests including Adnan were agog when Azaan and Salman disappeared for almost an hour.

Laughs Adnan, "Later I came to know that Salman took Azaan for a ride on his buggy scooter (an all-terrain vehicle) on the beach. My boy was simply blown way. He says it was one of the best experiences of his life.

His hair was windswept when he came back with Salman and he had that far-away look in his eyes that I hadn't seen while Azaan did the other fun things in Mumbai with me.

Salman is a very dear friend. And although he had hordes of birthday guests to look after he made my boy feel special and comfortable. I'll never forget that."

And now Azaan want a buggy scooter of his own. "Of course I'll get it for him. There's nothing I won't get Azaan. All he has to say is he wants it. On the way to Salman's farmhouse in Panvel Azaan tasted Mumbai's junk food, pao-bhaji, bhel-puri etc, for the first time. Now he wants to take some of that also back for his mother."

But the one baggage that would be toughest to transport from Mumbai to Karachi is Adnan's pet golden-labrador Rock. Apart from the practical problems of transporation there's an emotional obstacle to the canine migration.

Adnan's second wife and Azaan's stepmother Sabah is very attached to Rock.

Says the doting father, "There's nothing I'd deny my boy. But this is between Sabah and Azaan. Rock is very attached to my wife. And now he has taken a shine to my son in time at all. My dog even sleeps comfortably on the same bed as my son. Azaan does want to take him back."

Earlier Adnan had offered to send another of his dogs Jazz to Karachi for Rock. Jazz is now with Adnan's parents in Houston.

"So it's now Salman's buggy, Sabah's dog and Mumbai's bhel-puri that my son wants to take back to Karachi."

Quite a goodwill ambassador from Pakistan, this 14-year old!

Newcomers rejuvenate Bollywood in 2008

Newcomers rejuvenate Bollywood in 2008

Mumbai, Jan 1 (IANS) The year 2008 saw a variety of debutants in Bollywood, from fresh faces to new filmmakers. If Asin Thottumkal was a storehouse of expressions in "Ghajini", Anushka Sharma in "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" was natural and spontaneous.

The third important female discovery was Mugdha Godse. Bold and uninhibited, she stood her ground in "Fashion" in spite of an author-backed part for Priyanka Chopra.

Prachi Desai, a fourth fabulous female debutante came earlier during the year. With her sweet and tender big-screen debut in "Rock On", she proved that television stars do shine in cinema.

The myth that television actors falter and fall while making that transition was broken twice over in 2008. Not just Prachi but also Rajeev Khandelwal, who made a powerful debut in "Aamir", along with first time director Rajkumar Gupta. The debutant filmmaker emblazoned his name with a tale of terrorism that travelled the tormented streets of Mumbai in scampering motions.

In the field of direction, if "Aamir" gave us a camera-worthy director in Gupta, two more directors dabbling in terrorism - Nishikant Kamat in "Mumbai Meri Jaan" and Neeraj Pandey in "A Wednesday" - came out with flying colours.

Indeed 2008 was the year of deep directorial impact. Abhishek Kapoor, who had once acted in a film called "Uff! Yeh Mohabbat" with his then girlfriend Twinkle Khanna in the lead, was resurrected as the man behind "Rock On!".

For all practical purposes this was Abhishek's beginning as a director and what a debut!

Ditto "Munnabhai" writer-turned-director Abbas Tyrewala, who shone in meteoric motions in the inspiring company of his debut-making hero Imran Khan in "Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na"

I'm comfortable in army quarters: Anushka

Mumbai, Jan 2 (IANS) She has been catapulted to star status with her debut in "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi". But Anushka Sharma says she is a simple girl just like her character in the movie and has no plans to move into a plush home as she is enjoying her stay in the army quarters here.

"I kept coming to Mumbai for modelling assignments. I decided to move into Mumbai a year ago with my mom, since my dad is posted out. I haven't bought my place. Right now I'm very comfortable in the army quarters. I don't feel the need to move from where I am," Anushka told IANS.

The actress, who has signed one more film with Yash Raj Films, says she was lucky to be brought up in Bangalore.

"Otherwise army officers, who give their lives for the country, could be posted anywhere in the back of beyond. That gets really tough on their kids. Me and my brother (who used to be a state-level cricketer) got the best of education in Bangalore," said Anushka.

Directed by Aditya Chopra, the romance drama starring Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka hit bull's eye at the box office and the collections are going strong even after three weeks.

Ask her how she managed to be so natural in her first film, Anushka said: "All the while I was modelling in Bangalore, maybe there was an actor lurking within me. I'm crazy about my modelling work. I love the ramp and the backstage banter. I moved to Mumbai a year ago. Movies were not a priority. I don't come from a film background, don't know how the industry works. I didn't know anyone here."

She didn't have to make a strenuous effort to act.

"Even modelling is a kind of performance. On the ramp you are representing a concept. In a film, you're projecting an individual. But the transition wasn't hard for me. Because in real life I'm as simple as the girl I play in 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi'. Yes, I do like to dress up and walk the ramp. But that isn't the real me

The legend of Shah Rukh Khan lives on

The legend of Shah Rukh Khan lives on

The legend of Shah Rukh Khan lives on

New Delhi, Jan 3 (IANS) It was love at first sight for both Deepika Padukone and Anushka Sharma when the then school-going girls watched Shah Rukh Khan win hearts in "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge". But not even in their wildest dreams did they think that they would star opposite the superstar in their maiden ventures.

Hailing from Bangalore, both the model-turned-actresses have been self-proclaimed Shah Rukh fans since childhood and have grown up watching almost all his films.

Deepika's and Anushka's entry into Bollywood came as a pleasant surprise and pushed their big-screen careers on a high as their debut films - "Om Shanti Om" (2007) and "Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi" (2008) respectively - hit the bull's eye, courtesy their co-star Shah Rukh Khan.

"Initially, I was very nervous about working with him. But Shah Rukh made it very comfortable for me. We did readings together; we met socially so that we were comfortable when we faced the camera. He's someone I grew up watching," 22-year-old Deepika had told IANS in an earlier interview.

Said 19-year old Anushka: "I never had the intention to be an actress. It happened out of luck and I consider myself very fortunate to be part of such a big banner (Yash Raj Films) in my debut film and to be working with a star like Shah Rukh."

Her favourite films also include "Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" and "Chak De! India".

Considering the age difference between him and Deepika, Shah Rukh also aired a joke in the media before the release of "Om Shanti Om" about his fear of being called "uncle" by his co-star on the film sets.

Though the age difference between him and his co-stars was big, it was hardly a deterrent in the success of the two. The audiences and critics were generous with their applause for the on-screen chemistry between the 40-plus actor and the young girls - Deepika and Anushka.

'Ghajini' computer games to hit the market

'Ghajini' computer games to hit the market

Mumbai, Jan 2 (IANS) Now that the producers of "Ghajini" have claimed to make profits of more than Rs.1 billion in the first five days of its release, it's time to move the film's success to another level.

A PC game, named Ghajini The Game, featuring Aamir Khan, is ready to hit the market this week.

Earlier the video game was scheduled to hit the market a month before the "Ghajini" release.

"But we wanted to polish it up more, and use it as a USP after the film's release when audiences are really interested in the chase aspect of the plot that manoeuvres the game," says "Ghajini" producer Madhu Mantena.

Designed by Shashi Reddy, chairperson of FX Labs and Ghajini's co-producer Madhu Mantena, Ghajini The Game was executed at a cost approximately Rs.30 million.

Mantena said: "It's as slick as any cat-and-mouse PC Game with a computerised Aamir Khan looking like a replica of what he did in 'Ghajini' (same hairstyle included) chasing the villains. Basically the game borrows the 'Ghajini' plot from the time Aamir's character is hit on the head to the time he catches and kills the first villain."

Other games in the series will carry the chase further.

"The idea is to take the success of 'Ghajini' further. And that's why the player has to get Ghajini The Game right in 15 minutes. Or he has to start again. That's the time-span for which our hero regains his memory, remember?" Mantena said.

Shweta wants to beat SRK on screen energy

Shweta wants to beat SRK on screen energy

New Delhi, Jan 2 (IANS) "Mission Istaanbul" actress Shweta Bhardwaj says she has the ability to beat King Khan's energy on screen.

"I would really want to work with Shah Rukh Khan because I want to beat his energy. Everyone keeps raving about his energy level and I want to show people that I can beat him on that," Shweta told IANS on telephone from Mumbai.

The model-turned-actress, who made her Bollywood debut with Apoorva Lakhia's film on global terrorism, "Mission Istaanbul", also did the Telugu movie "Indumathi".

Her first Hindi film was not very well received at the box-office, but Shweta is unperturbed.

"I was not disappointed with the bad performance of 'Mission Istaanbul'. If a film doesn't do well, that doesn't mean it's not a good film. It's quite possible that the audience didn't understand the film. What I'm happy about is that I was noticed in the film and got individual appreciation," Shweta said.

"Mission Istaanbul" was produced by Suniel Shetty's Popcorn Entertainment and Shweta is currently shooting for her second film, "Loot", which is again produced by the same banner. It also stars Suniel, Govinda, Javed Jaffery and Mimoh Chakraborty.

The movie, scheduled for a March release, revolves around four over-ambitious people who come together to rob a person in Bangkok to make a quick buck.

Shweta says she had to be extra careful on the sets of "Loot".

"On the sets I had to be very conscious because everyone was senior and I didn't want to hurt anyone. In fact, once I called Govinda, Chichi bhaiya, and Suniel told me it wasn't appropriate. So after that I became very careful," Shweta said.
